Pasture Regeneration
The methodology of PRV relies on the rate of pasture regeneration at each moment of the year. Due to Senan's mediterranean climate, there are significant seasonal changes in the rate of regeneration, which affects the number of total plots needed for the horses. In Senan's rainy spring season theoretically need only 30-45 days to regenerate, where as in the slower growing winter months, they need 70-90. The drought season also slows pasture regeneration. However, these numbers have been adapted from another regenerative grazing project in Catalunya, and we are now testing those assumptions on site. For instance, we estimated an average of 34 days in the rainy season, but the initial plots grazed in April 2021 regenerated within 21 days, and the plots were mowed.
